Next Steps:

1

Contact Insurance Providers

Contact your Homeowner's and/or Vehicle Insurance Providers to find out if you're covered before proceeding with filing claims.

Truth is, many of our homes have been passed down for generations. Some were purchased long before flood insurance was even a thing.

Now is not the time for shaming our neighbors for what they didn't know, or for being in a situation where they were forced to decide between full coverage, or a roof over their head.  Don't be embarrassed, or ashamed.  It's important that you are proactive; find out whether you had actually flood coverage or not before submitting a claim.

Typically, those without flood insurance are advised to not file a claim as the inevitable insurance claim denial may not work in your favor.

In this case, if we do get assistance from FEMA, they would most likely require a denial in order to provide assitance.

2

Submit Online County Survey

Residents and businesses who experienced flooding during Monday’s storm can report damage through the County of San Diego’s online survey.  Completing the voluntary form will assist the County of San Diego with collecting damage information related to the storm.

The survey will only be used to gather information to determine if the County should request state and/or federal assistance.

Completing the form does not guarantee that you will be eligible to receive any disaster relief assistance.

Filling out the survey is also not a substitution for filing a claim with your insurance.

3

File City Claim Form

Print, complete, and file.  In person, if possible.  From what we've gather speaking to local leaders and City officials there still seems to be so many unknowns, including whether your Claim will even be reimbursed or not.  But it's important that you take the first step.  Print, Complete and File

Many obviously don't have access to a printer at the moment, so Contact Us if you need someone to hand deliver a copy, or need assistance translating or completing.

Then What?

4

Report Bulky Items

The City’s Environmental Services Department will begin removing accumulated trash and debris from storm-impacted areas in the communities of Southcrest, Mountain View and other neighborhoods.

Residents can report bulky items left in the public right of way using the City’s Get It Done app under the category for “Illegal Dumping” or by calling (858) 694-7000.

Looking For Your Vehicle?

If you are a resident attempting to locate your vehicle as a result of Monday’s storm you can:

  • Search AutoReturn Online - AutoReturn searches for vehicles towed by the City of San Diego only.

  • Call AutoReturn (619) 527-4392

If you can't locate your vehicle on AutoReturn, call the SDPD non-emergency line at (619) 531-2000

And Then?

7

Documentation is KEY

Take photos and video footage of as much of the damage as possible.   Be sure to include flood damage to not only your home, but also your vehicles and personal property.   Also take a moment to sit down and right out a timelime of what happened while it's still fresh in your mind.

8

Clean Up

Mold can start to appear within 24-48 hours.  The longer you wait, the more costly and potentially dangerous to your health.  Sadly, some insurance agencies are telling homeowners to leave conditions as is until they conduct a site visit, so be sure to contact your insurance provider beforehand.

9

Save Your Receipts

Whether insured or not, SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS!   This includes lodging, cleaning supplies, repairs, materials, and any other types of expenses related to the flood.

Another suggestion, if it makes things easier - Consider getting a debit card and using it solely for flood-related expenses.  That way, all the expenses and transaction history are located in the same place.
